Medieval Floor Tile With A Radial Design – Anjou, 13th Century, Gothic Middle Ages
Medieval terracotta floor tile, Anjou, 13th century, with geometric and floral designs.
The design, rendered in yellow on a brown background, is organized around a central wheel or rosette from which several floral motifs radiate. Clover leaves and plant motifs surround the composition, while fleurs-de-lis adorn the corners, creating a particularly elegant design characteristic of 13th-century Angevin productions.
This type of decoration is notably attested in the Anjou region, where comparable tiles have been found in Angers, as well as in several religious institutions in the area, notably at the Abbey of Asnières and the Abbey of Saint-Maur de Glanfeuil, in Maine-et-Loire.
The spread of these works beyond Anjou is also documented: floor tiles in the Angevin tradition have been found, notably, at Noyers Abbey in Indre-et-Loire, as well as at Suscinio Castle in Morbihan, attesting to the circulation of these decorated floor tiles during the Middle Ages.
A fine example of a 13th-century medieval floor tile, notable both for its decoration and for the insight it provides into the production and distribution of Angevin floor tiles.
