Medieval Bronze Bedside Font – Flanders, Late 15th Century, High Gothic Period
A beautifully crafted bronze holy water font with a pentagonal basin and pointed spout, resting on a concave base and featuring a flat back. This type of object, traditionally placed near the bed, is commonly referred to as a “bedside holy water font,” intended for domestic devotion and the daily use of holy water.
This is a Flemish work from the late 15th century, characteristic of Northern European production in the late Middle Ages. The object has a beautiful antique patina.
Note: the handle and one fastener are missing.
