13th-century Medieval Belt, Castle Motif, Middle Ages, Gothic, High Middle Ages

13th-century medieval belt, castle motif, Middle Ages, Gothic, High Middle Ages

This extremely rare set consists of a sumptuous double-ring buckle made of a copper alloy, fitted with an iron prong, and a fragment of a belt that still retains its original fabric.

The buckle features an exceptional heraldic design depicting a castle consisting of a central keep flanked by two towers. This motif, emblematic of Castile, is notably found on medieval floor tiles as well as on various works of art from this period. The buckle retains a significant portion of its original gilding, attesting to the prestigious nature of this piece.

The fabric, made of precious red silk velvet, is adorned with small floral appliqués in gilded metal, which also retain their original gilding. The quality of the materials and the refinement of the decoration unequivocally indicate that this belt was intended for a figure of the very highest rank.

Complete belts of this type are extremely rare on the market and in collections. They are major examples of 13th-century aristocratic costume.

The state of preservation is exceptional. The only note is a discreet consolidation of the cap with a tiny dot of reversible adhesive, applied to stabilize a slight fragility. Apart from this perfectly reversible intervention, the entire piece is entirely original.

Due to its rarity, the quality of its craftsmanship, and the preservation of its gilding and original fabric, this belt is truly museum-quality.

Dimensions: buckle length: 7.5 cm, total length of the piece: 11.5 cm.
