Rare medieval pewter dinner plate, Flanders, 14th–15th century.

The exceptional interest of this piece lies in its decoration, which is particularly unusual for this type of object. The center of the plate is adorned with a patched Christian cross, whose shape evokes the crosses traditionally associated with Templar iconography. The rim also features a pattern of small crosses in four places.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no other known medieval pewter tea set plates with a comparable design, which gives this piece a truly unique character.

These small tableware sets were produced in the Middle Ages by trinket makers, artisans who specialized in crafting small objects, particularly those made of pewter. Their output included a wide variety of small utensils and miniature objects, as well as certain items related to the practice of pilgrimage, such as pilgrim badges.

Medieval pewter tea sets are particularly rare today. Their small size and playful nature naturally exposed them to handling and play by children. Furthermore, since pewter is a material that can be easily remelted, many examples have likely disappeared to be transformed into new objects.

Our example is complete, though it has a tiny chip on the rim and a small hole—imperfections that in no way prevent a clear appreciation of the object or its decoration. This small pewter plate, in very fine and rare condition, comes from a former French collection and is said to have originated in Flanders.
