Small albarello-shaped ointment jar in Dutch majolica, dating from the second half of the 16th century, circa 1550–1600.

With a slightly curved cylindrical shape, this small apothecary jar is decorated with a geometric pattern in blue and orange, composed of stylized motifs characteristic of early majolica productions in the Netherlands.

Dutch majolica production flourished in the 16th century under the direct influence of Italian faience, whose designs, forms, and decorations were highly sought after at the time among the wealthy and princely circles of Northern Europe. Pottery makers in the Netherlands gradually adapted these Italian designs to local tastes, giving rise to an original style that remains relatively rare and is now particularly sought after by collectors.

This type of small apothecary jar, intended to hold ointments or medicinal preparations, is particularly interesting for its size and the graphic simplicity of its decoration. Examples of Dutch majolica from this period—and more specifically small pharmaceutical containers—are very rare on the art and antiques market.
