A Westerwald Jug, Circa 1600–1620
A Westerwald Stoneware jug .
This baluster-shaped jug features vertical flutes decorating the lower part of the body.
The upper part features areas with carved grid-like patterns (the *Kerbschnitt* technique) and stamped floral motifs.
The neck is adorned with a mask featuring a particularly grotesque face and is topped with a pewter lid.
Westerwald, circa 1600–1620.
Height without lid: 21.6 cm.
Condition: normal wear and tear; a hairline crack 1.7 cm long on the inside of the neck;
a small chip on the rim and on the handle, beneath the pewter mount.
Firing defects beneath the base.
A similar jug was discovered in a pit at the Martin’s Hundred plantation site in Virginia, alongside local pottery, one piece of which was dated to 1631.
