Medieval Spanish Bronze Mortar With Wings – 13th-14th Century, Heritage Of Al-andalus
Medieval Spanish Bronze Mortar with Wings – 13th-14th Century, Heritage of Al-Andalus.
Rare bronze mortar of Spanish manufacture, dating from the 13th-14th centuries. This model, typical of Iberian workshops, is distinguished by its winged shape, directly inspired by productions from the Arab world, testifying to the lasting influence of Al-Andalus on Gothic Spain.
This type of mortar, widely distributed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, was very popular for its robustness and ergonomics. The example presented here has eight inverted wings, punctuated by two pierced handles. These features ensured an excellent grip and originally allowed the object to be suspended using rings, now lost.
It is in fine condition, with a pleasing, partially cracked, antique patina, attesting to its authenticity and age.
Dimensions: Height: 7.3 cm Diameter (without handles): 9.4 cm Diameter (with handles): 13.7 cm
Price excluding shipping costs.
Police Register Ref: A024.
