16th-century Bronze Apothecary Or House Mortar With Baluster Decoration Featuring Torsoes Of Nude Women
This bronze mortar from the 16th century features remarkable casting work and a beautiful, dark period patina marked by natural signs of wear.
Its structure consists of a slightly truncated conical body flaring out toward a wide, molded rim with a flat edge and a stable circular base designed to withstand the impact of the pestle. The circumference of the mortar is punctuated by vertical balusters in high relief that serve as gripping points, between which are inserted applied motifs depicting stylized figures (nude female mythological figures).
These characteristic decorations are reminiscent of works by bronze casters from the Lyon region or central France during the Renaissance or the 16th and 17th centuries.
In good overall condition; previously restored at the base.
Dimensions: height 8.7 cm; diameter 14.6 cm
