"The Grenadiers' Halt" Pencil and gouache drawing, signed and dated 1829 at the bottom. The scene depicts two grenadiers in uniform, halting in front of an inn or farmhouse where a woman offers them a drink. One of the grenadiers caresses the woman's chin while the other pours himself a drink. The woman's children, a little girl and a young boy, observe the scene. Hippolyte Bellangé, born January 17, 1800, in Paris and died in the same city on April 10, 1866, was a French painter, draftsman, engraver, and lithographer. A student of Gros, Bellangé made a name for himself painting battles and military scenes. Several of his canvases are held at the Museum of the History of France in Versailles. He specialized in military subjects, which he exhibited at numerous shows throughout his life. Drawing mounted on a sheet of heavy paper, measuring 30.2 x 27 cm.
