"Jacques Callot: Grand View Of Paris: View Of The Louvre - 1629/1630 17th Century Engraving"
Jacques Callot: View of the Louvre - 1629. This view was probably drawn in 1628 or 1629, a time when Jacques Callot was in Paris preparing for the sieges of La Rochelle and Saint-Martin-de-Ré. This print is related to the drawing held at Chatsworth House (M. 1102) which depicts the game of Goose Shooting and the jousts held on the Seine to celebrate the King's return in 1629. This copperplate engraving was made after Callot's return to Nancy, as it does not bear the publisher's imprint of Israel Sylvestre. This view of Paris is among Jacques Callot's most beautiful and famous prints. The View of the Louvre, with the Porte de Nesle and the Tour de Nesle on the left and the Galerie du Louvre on the right, is enlivened by a nautical festival that took place in Paris on August 25th. Jousting tournaments were then organized on the Seine. Dimensions of the printed area: 32.1 x 15.3 cm. Plate mark: 33 x 17.5 cm. Short margin proof, flush with the plate mark, formerly mounted on cardboard, with a mat, damage and tears in the margin. J.
