In the foreground, a young woman is depicted kneeling on stone steps, wearing a draped, antique-style dress that emphasizes the grace of her movement. She leans forward, her hands outstretched toward a family of chicks scattered at her feet.
The hen, their mother, watches over them and prepares to attack the young woman who is "stealing" her chicks. Perched high on the edge of a fountain, the father (the rooster) dominates the scene with a proud air, observing the interaction below. A beautiful composition that blends animal portraiture and genre scene. Contemporary oak frame.
