Egyptian alabaster funerary vase, Middle Kingdom (2033–1786 B.C.). Egyptian Archaeology

This remarkable piece stands out for its unusual form: a cylindrical vase with a long neck resting on a small pedestal, with particularly elegant proportions. Measuring 17.7 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter, it is a large specimen, a quality rarely found in this type of vessel.

The vase is carved from high-quality Egyptian alabaster. It is in very good condition, with only a few tiny chips on the rim. The interior retains traces of the tools used during its manufacture, indicating that it was shaped on a potter’s wheel. The slight irregularities in the pedestal, as well as the variations in the lip’s thickness—ranging from 3 mm to 5 mm—perfectly illustrate the artisanal craftsmanship of Egyptian workshops of that era.

Alabaster vases played an essential role in the funerary practices of ancient Egypt. Intended to hold perfumed oils, ointments, or precious substances placed in tombs, they were objects of prestige reserved for the elite.

With its exceptional dimensions, rare shape, and excellent state of preservation, this piece is a remarkable example of Middle Kingdom stone carving. A first-rate collector’s item, it is as appealing to an archaeology enthusiast as it is to a collector of Egyptian art.

Dimensions: height 17.7 cm; diameter 6 cm.

A very beautiful object, rare on the market.
