Miniature Gothic bronze candlestick – “Ringkandelaar” type ” – Flanders, 15th century, medieval

Rare miniature Gothic candlestick cast in bronze, of the type known as “ring candlestick” or “ ring-style”, known as Ringkandelaar in the former Netherlands. This form is characteristic of 15th-century Flemish production and constitutes a remarkable example of medieval bronze art.

The candlestick rests on a circular base adorned with an elegant openwork frieze composed of fleurs-de-lis. In the center rises a truncated cone topped by a circular ring, which in turn is crowned by a cylindrical cup designed to hold the candle. The candle holder is accentuated by two fine parallel moldings.

This piece features a superb antique dark green patina—shiny and uniform—which perfectly highlights its form and decoration.

Condition: in good overall condition. Note that two fleurs-de-lis are missing from the openwork frieze on the base; this does not affect the stability or the presentation of the object.
