Bronze Mortar - High Period, Le Puy-en-velay, Early XVIIᵉ Century, Apothecary

Rare bronze mortar dating from the early XVIIᵉ century, from an Auvergne work from Le Puy-en-Velay, a particularly active foundry center at this time and renowned for this type of production.

These mortars were mainly used in apothecaries for the preparation of remedies, enabling plants, minerals and other medicinal substances to be ground, long before the industrialization of pharmacy.

The body, with its beautiful presence, is punctuated by eight buttresses. Between each of them are solar mastilles surmounted by fleur-de-lis, testifying to a refined, symbolic decoration. One bay is distinguished by a different cross motif. The rim is decorated with small round pastilles.

We note the presence of a significant crack, with no impact on the stability of the piece, but worth mentioning. It in no way alters its strong decorative power or historical interest.
