Brass Equinoctial Sundial Signed Lorenz Grassl - Augsburg, 18th Century
Lovely brass equinoctial sundial dating from the second half of the 18th century, of German manufacture, attributed to the city of Augsburg, a mecca for the production of scientific instruments at the time.
This model features a finely crafted octagonal base, integrating an original compass in its center. The rim is richly decorated and entirely engraved with delicate floral motifs, testifying to high quality workmanship.
The instrument is signed by the artist.
The instrument is signed below the base "L. Grasl", for Lorenz Grassl, whose manufactures are dated between 1740 and 1780. Above this signature are several inscriptions, including "Eleva Poli" (elevation at the poles), as well as names of cities accompanied by their respective latitudes, allowing its use according to different locations.
The instrument is signed "L. Grasl".
A scientific object as much as a decorative one, this sundial perfectly illustrates the skills of 18th-century German craftsmen.
