16th-century Fireplace Brick – Battle Of Lepanto, 1571 – Antwerp, Netherlands, Renaissance

Rare red terracotta fireplace brick, known as “ haardsteen,” depicting a scene from the Naval Battle of Lepanto (1571). Produced in the Southern Netherlands in the late 16th century. Intended for use in hearths and fireplaces, these bricks could feature particularly elaborate figurative decorations inspired by biblical, mythological, historical, or military scenes.

This piece stands out in particular for its exceptional and exceptionally rare iconography: it depicts a naval battle featuring several ships engaged in combat. The subject here is reminiscent of the Battle of Lepanto, fought on October 7, 1571, in the Gulf of Patras, off the coast of Greece. This confrontation pitted the fleet of the Holy League—comprising, notably, Venice, Spain, and the Papal States—against the Ottoman fleet. The Holy League’s victory was a major event in 16th-century Mediterranean history and gave rise to a significant number of commemorative images in Europe.

The depiction on this haardsteen thus attests to the spread, in the Southern Netherlands, of contemporary imagery dedicated to the major military and naval events of the second half of the 16th century.

This iconography is particularly rare on fireplace bricks. A few examples featuring an identical depiction are known, notably from archaeological finds in Antwerp.

The brick is now broken into two fragments, with a few small chips and imperfections, but the decoration remains very legible and perfectly identifiable, allowing one to appreciate the composition and the numerous details of the naval scene.One can easily make out the hulls of the ships, soldiers, swords, and crossbows.

A particularly interesting piece due to its exceptional historical iconography, its rarity, and its association with the production of haardstenen from the Flemish Renaissance.
