15th-century Medieval Knife With Original Sheath – From Suffolk, Medieval Archaeology

15th-century medieval knife with original sheath – From Suffolk, medieval archaeology

An exceptional 15th-century medieval knife, accompanied by its rare original sheath, from a former English collection. The set was originally discovered in Suffolk (England) and is a remarkable example of medieval cutlery from Northern Europe.

The knife, measuring 16.1 cm in length, is forged from steel. The blade still bears the maker’s mark—a crown—visible at its base. Its elegant openwork bronze handle belongs to an uncommon type, of which a few comparable examples are known from the Netherlands as well as northern France, notably from the archaeological excavations at Valenciennes. This type of knife appears to be characteristic of medieval Northern Europe (England, Belgium, the Netherlands, and northern France).

The leather sheath is truly remarkable for its exceptional state of preservation. One side is entirely decorated with a delicate pattern of tiny fleurs-de-lis created with a punch—a design of great finesse that is rarely preserved with such high quality.

The fact that the knife and its original sheath are together makes this set particularly rare and highly sought-after. Complete sets from this period have become very difficult to find on the market, making this piece a true collector’s item, worthy of a museum display.

A first-rate acquisition for enthusiasts of antique cutlery, medieval archaeology, or high-quality historical artifacts.
