Norwegian "Løvekanne" Mug ” Carved from a Birch Root – 18th Century

A very beautiful 18th-century Norwegian mug, known as the “Løvekanne” (lion mug), entirely carved from a single birch root.

This remarkable piece is the wooden counterpart to the metal-lidded pitchers produced in the Nordic and Baltic countries during the 17th and 18th centuries. Its shape is directly inspired by German pitchers, while its broad, stocky proportions perfectly reflect the Scandinavian Baroque aesthetic of the period.

Traditionally made to celebrate a wedding or an important event, these mugs were kept and passed down from generation to generation as true family heirlooms. They are generally distinguished by the presence of a lion carved on the handle, hence their name “lion mugs ."

The example shown here stands out for the richness of its decoration: a carved lion on the handle, finely executed geometric and plant motifs on the handle and lid, as well as three carved feet. Beneath the base are the pyrographed initials “EV,” which may correspond to the manufacturer or a former owner.

Dimensions: diameter: 15 cm, height: 22 cm

In good overall condition. The only flaw worth noting is a small, old chip on the lid, which does not affect the appearance or structural integrity of the piece.

A rare and authentic piece of 18th-century Scandinavian folk art, combining high-quality carving, ethnographic character, and a strong decorative presence.
