Pewter Pilgrimage Badge – Saint Cornelius, Bishop Of Ninove – Netherlands, 15th Century
A rare pewter pilgrimage badge depicting Saint Cornelius, Bishop of Ninove, standing in liturgical vestments, wearing a miter and a chasuble.
This large badge (8 cm) features a particularly interesting depiction of Saint Cornelius, Bishop of Ninove, a religious figure venerated in the former Netherlands. He is traditionally associated with protection against illness, particularly nervous and convulsive disorders, which explains the popularity of his cult and the widespread circulation of small devotional objects bearing his image. His iconography naturally depicts him as a bishop, with the attributes of his ecclesiastical office: miter, chasuble, and sometimes a crosier.
The sign bears witness to the medieval practice of pilgrimages and popular devotion, as these small objects were intended to be brought back by pilgrims as souvenirs and mementos of their journey. The depiction of a saintly bishop in pewter is fully in keeping with the tradition of pilgrimage tokens from the former Netherlands.
The object comes from a former Dutch collection and was discovered in the Netherlands, which makes it particularly interesting in light of its iconography and the context of its discovery.
