African Sigillata Ceramic Roman Bowl – 3rd Century – North Africa – Carthage
A beautiful Roman African sigillata ceramic bowl, made of fine clay with an orange-red surface, produced in North Africa, likely in the Carthage region (modern-day Tunisia), during the 3rd century A.D.
This piece is part of the African tradition that draws on the forms and techniques of the famous Gallo-Roman sigillata pottery, particularly those from the workshops at La Graufesenque and Lezoux. It is inspired by the Dragendorff 14 type.
The piece is in excellent overall condition, with only a small localized chip on the underside (see photograph). The surface features a beautiful antique patina as well as some traces of deposits resulting from its time in an archaeological context.
Object appraised by the Daniel Lebeurrier firm in Paris.
