Pair Of Iron Parchment Scissors — Spain, Toledo, Late 16th / Early 17th Century, High Period
A rare pair of wrought-iron parchment shears, of Spanish craftsmanship, likely originating from the Toledo region, dating from the late 16th or very early 17th century.
Intended for cutting parchment used primarily for correspondence, these scissors represent a particularly early model. Their design foreshadows the famous Toledo scissors that would later emerge, recognizable by their exceptional craftsmanship and engraved decorations.
This particular pair is especially interesting for its age and decoration. The two rings are adorned with bird motifs, a decorative theme that was in vogue during this period and is found on certain contemporary French and Spanish pairs of scissors. With their shape, decoration, and quality of craftsmanship, these scissors thus represent an early example of the production that would give rise to the famous, richly engraved Toledo models of the 17th and 18th centuries.
This is a rare piece on the market, both for its age and for its role as a precursor to the later Toledo scissors.
In used condition, with old signs of corrosion and a patina consistent with the object’s age.
Dimensions: length 27.7 cm.
A particularly interesting piece for collectors of antique wrought-iron objects, historical cutlery, and instruments from the Renaissance and early modern periods.
