Medieval Statuette Of A Saint With A Cross - Knife Handle, 14th-15th Century

Rare medieval statuette carved in bone, dating from the 14th-15th centuries.

It depicts a female figure, probably a saint, dressed in a long tunic and wearing a veil. The figure holds a large cross in her hands, an attribute that reinforces her religious character. Despite its popular and naive execution, the work reveals a real sensitivity in the treatment of volumes and facial details, as well as a certain elegance in the general attitude.

This sculpture was most likely originally the handle of a knife. Handles adorned with carved figures in bone or ivory were in fact very popular during the late Middle Ages, particularly between the 14th and 15th centuries.

The object has a superb old patina, shiny and silky, as well as a beautiful tan coloration acquired over the centuries. It comes from a very old Belgian collection.
