Medieval Pewter Bowl, Netherlands, 15th Century, Hallmarks, Gothic Medieval Tableware

Medieval pewter bowl, Netherlands, 15th century, hallmarks, Gothic medieval tableware

Rare medieval pewter bowl, dating from the 15th century, featuring a beautiful dark patina and originally discovered in an aquatic environment in the Netherlands.

The date is established by the piece’s typology, as well as by the circumstances of its discovery. The bowl was in fact found alongside a second object, a circular pewter cutting board also dating from the 15th century, which will soon be offered for sale on Proantic. This find context provides valuable insight into the piece’s dating and archaeological provenance.

The bowl bears two circular hallmarks on the marli, the identification of which remains to be determined. The first depicts a marching lion facing left; the second, which is more difficult to read, has yet to be interpreted.

The craftsmanship reflects the techniques used to shape tin in the Middle Ages: the piece was hammered into shape and then turned on a lathe, as clearly shown by the turning marks preserved beneath the base.

Beneath the base is also a small engraved triangular mark, possibly suggesting a trowel or similar tool. This mark can be interpreted as a mark of ownership, adding further interest to this object.

The prolonged time spent in an aquatic environment naturally led to some loss of material, visible in the photographs. These imperfections, resulting from the conditions of preservation, nonetheless contribute to the unique archaeological history of this piece.

With its understated appearance, dark patina, ancient marks, and still-visible traces of its manufacture, this bowl is a beautiful example of medieval tableware, particularly appealing to enthusiasts of antique pewter objects and archaeology.
