Relic Of Saint Peter The Apostle, 19th-century Oval Silver Reliquary, Bearing A Bishop's Seal
A charming portable silver reliquary, oval in shape, dating from the 19th century, containing a relic of Saint Peter the Apostle.
The relic, which is small—about 3 mm—is accompanied by its authentic tag bearing the Latin inscription “S. Petri Apos.,” an abbreviation for Sancti Petri Apostoli, meaning “Saint Peter the Apostle .” This inscription allows for the precise identification of the relic preserved within the medallion.
The reliquary is particularly noteworthy for the preservation of its original seal on the reverse side. It remains sealed with authentication threads and a red wax ecclesiastical seal, likely an episcopal one. The seal’s impression has yet to be identified, but the fact that it remains intact is a particularly important factor in the authenticity and integrity of the entire artifact.
The reliquary has never been opened: the seal is perfectly preserved, and no alterations have been made to the relic. It is therefore an object that has remained in its original ecclesiastical condition.
The presence of an identified relic of Saint Peter—one of the Twelve Apostles and, according to Christian tradition, the first Bishop of Rome—makes this object of particular interest to collectors of sacred art and antique reliquaries.
Reliquary: approximately 2 cm high, excluding the loop
Total height: approximately 2.4 cm, including the loop
A small object, yet one of great historical and devotional significance, which still retains the elements of its ecclesiastical authentication.
