Papierolle Reliquary Frame With Relics And St. Louis De Gonzague, Salzburg, C. 1800
Small reliquary frame in the form of a convent work in papierolle, probably Austria, probably Salzburg, circa 1790-1800. At its center is a reliquary capsule of St. Louis de Gonzague ("S. Aloysii C."), surrounded by several other saintly relics. The ensemble is presented in a décor composed of paperolles and textile elements.
Among the relics identified are S. Donata, S. Candida, S. Amanda, S. Columba, Victor M., S. Nommata M., as well as two Agnus Dei. Rose-colored paperolles, gilded decorative elements and the central relic of St. Louis Gonzaga characterize this type of late 18th-century Austrian and South German convent work. The reverse retains four original wax seals.
Saint Louis de Gonzague (1568-1591) is one of the most venerated saints of the Society of Jesus. His cult spread widely, particularly in the Catholic regions of Austria and southern Germany.
