RELIQUARY FRAME WITH PAPEROLLES
Italy (probable), late 18th - early 19th century
Carved and gilded wood, mounted under glass.
Interior decoration in paperolles (rolled paper) embellished with metallic threads, pearls and textile background.
Composition centered on a medallion containing a fragment arranged in the shape of a cross, identified as a relic of the True Cross ("Ex Ligno Crucis"), surrounded by several relics of saints with authentic manuscripts.
Four "Agnus Dei" ( a mixture of wax and the dust or ashes of anonymous Catacomb Saints = Replicas!)
, representing Christian motifs and personages of the Catholic Church.
Reverse closed with ecclesiastical threads and wax seals, guaranteeing ancient integrity (unopened).
