Chasse - Blackened Wood Reliquary, Formerly Containing The Bones Of St. Valeri And St. Exuperantius, Tyrol, 8th Century

A blackened, molded wooden reliquary display case with an architectural design, revealing a particularly rich monastic arrangement. Displayed under glass are several fragments of relics of saints and martyrs, accompanied by handwritten phylacteries, one of which bears the partially legible inscription “Reliq. S. Valeri et S. Exuperantius.”

The relics are set against a remarkable backdrop of monastic crafts (“Klosterarbeiten”): trimmings and embroidery made of gold and silver metallic threads, cannetilles, small beads, glass beads, and cut-paper elements, forming, in particular, flowering branches. The ensemble is arranged on richly embellished fabric cushions, in keeping with the tradition of domestic and monastic reliquaries of Baroque devotion.
On the reverse, sealed with reddish wax (Episcopal Seal)
Tyrol, mid-18th century.
