"juan Suarez" Radiant Silver Monstrance, Oviedo (spain / Asturias), 18th Century
An impressive silver monstrance (1005 g) resting on a rounded, fluted circular base, extended by a baluster-style stem. A large central glass lunule surrounded by a spectacular halo of alternating rays, partially and lightly gilded with mercury.
The crown is adorned with a full-relief angel surmounted by a radiant cross.
A fine example of 18th-century Spanish religious silverwork, combining a sober structure with the Baroque exuberance of the Eucharistic halo.
Hallmarked on the inside of the base: the Oviedo mark and the “J. N / SUAREZ” hallmark of the silversmith Juan Suárez, Oviedo (Asturias).
