"christ In The Tomb" Wood Carving, Polychrome, Tyrol, Circa 1800
Christ in the Tomb
Probably Southern Germany or Austria, 19th century.
Carved wood, polychrome, and partially gilded. On a rectangular base, Christ rests on a shroud with deep folds. His head, framed by wavy hair and a beard, is slightly tilted, his eyes closed. The wound in his side and the stigmata recall the Passion. A white perizonium edged in gold wraps around his hips, revealing his feet resting one on top of the other.
A devotional work with finely sculpted features and dynamic drapery, likely originating from a Holy Sepulcher or a devotional ensemble.
Signs of wear and loss of polychromy and gilding; minor chips.
