Crucifixion Group In Alabaster, South German-austrian Work, 18th Century
Alabaster Crucifixion group, South German-Austrian work, probably Vienna or its surroundings, second half of the 18th century
Late Baroque South German-Austrian crucifixion group, probably Vienna or its surroundings, second half of the 18th century. The animated composition, with the cross surrounded by clouds and the divine figure appearing above, lends the whole a remarkable plastic presence.
Particularly noteworthy is the delicate workmanship of the faces, hands and drapery, as well as the supple modeling of the clouds. The quality of execution as well as the dimensions of the work evoke more a refined cabinet object or private devotional sculpture than a simple serial production of popular piety.
