“ The Martyr Of Saint Sebastian “ Oil On Canvas , South Germany Or Austria, End Of19.th Century
Saint Sebastian
Oil on canvas. Southern Germany or Austria, probably 18th century (after a Baroque model).
The young saint is depicted in a half-body position, tied to a tree and pierced with arrows. His gaze, imbued with pain, turns skyward. In the upper left, a putto is shown holding a palm, the symbol of martyrdom. The composition is inspired by 18th-century Baroque models, with supple modeling and animated drapery in the spirit of rococo.
Popularly inspired, slightly naive workshop work, probably intended for devotion.
