Head Of Saint John The Baptist With Relic, South Tyrol, 19th Century
Polychrome representation of the detached head of Saint John the Baptist presented on a silver-plated metal plate with integrated reliquary capsule. The capsule retains its original relic ticket bearing the inscription "Ex SS. MM. Gorcom. / S. Jois Bapt." (Jois = Joannis) and refers to relics of the Martyrs of Gorcum as well as Saint John the Baptist. Silvering worn, polychromy restored and completed.
Saint John the Baptist is among Christianity's most venerated saints. The depiction of his head on a plate is among his best-known iconographies. The Gorcum Martyrs mentioned on the relic ticket were a group of Catholic clergymen and religious put to death in 1572 during religious conflicts in the Netherlands. Their cult became widespread in Catholic regions in the 18th and 19th centuries.
