Round Reliquary Frame, Paperolles (nuns' Work) With Authentic Inscription On The Reverse, 19th Century
A rare and remarkable circular reliquary frame made of paper filigree, crafted by nuns (convent work), probably in the 19th century. This reliquary features an exquisitely refined concentric composition of paper filigree (rolls of gilded paper strips), arranged in radiating and spiraling patterns on a red textile background. The whole is enriched with numerous identified relics, each accompanied by handwritten cartouches mentioning saints (notably Saint Clare of Assisi, Saint Francis de Sales, etc.). At the center, a denser composition evokes a sacred heart or medallion, surrounded by successive, richly ornamented circles. On the reverse, the handwritten authentic: "I certify that the relics enclosed here were extracted from the reliquaries where the authentic ones are, sealed intact and given by hand by Monsignor Baron, Vicar General of the Diocese of Lyon, and these are the relics of St. Roch, St. Margaret, St. Eutropius, St. Clair, St. Innocent and that of St. Clare of Assisi, which has the authentic ones and which was given to me enclosed and sealed in the small silver reliquary which was opposite, whereupon I signed this present declaration this 1 June 1847 at St. Didier du Mont d'Or." As is.
