Crucifix Reliquary With Nail Of The True Cross, Body Of Christ In Boxwood, Early 17th Century
Reliquary Crucifix with a Nail of the True Cross, Rome, Monastery of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, 1891. Important blackened wood crucifix depicting Christ, carved in the round from boxwood (36 cm long). The whole rests on an architectural base forming a reliquary. Beneath the base is a glazed compartment containing an antique nail mounted on a red silk cushion with gold braid, accompanied by a red wax seal. The object is accompanied by its authentic handwritten document in Latin, dated Rome, Monastery of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, July 8, 1891, attesting that the nail is linked to a sacred nail kept in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, a sanctuary famous for housing relics of the Passion of Christ. Good overall condition, with wear and minor imperfections consistent with age.
