Reliquary Of The Sacred Heart, Austria, 18th Century
Architecturally designed reliquary made of inlaid wood with glass panels, Austria, 18th century. In the center is a watercolor depiction of the Sacred Heart on vellum, surrounded by relics as well as silver thread trimmings and glass beads (convent work).
The relics bear the original inscriptions “St. Dunstanus Ep,” “S. Jacobus Nisib. E,” “S. Dionysio Epo. et M.,” “S. Paulo Apostolo,” and “S. Cunegundis Imp.”. They refer to Saint Dunstan of Canterbury, archbishop and reformer of the English Church, to Saint James of Nisibis, bishop of the early Eastern Church, to Saint Denis, bishop and martyr, to the Apostle Saint Paul, and to Saint Cunegunde, Empress.
