Christ Child Salvator Mundi, Italy Or Spain, Around 1700
Carved, polychromed and partially gilded wooden sculpture depicting the Christ Child as Salvator Mundi, Italy or Spain, circa 1700. The right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, while the left hand holds a gilded orb, symbolising Christ’s dominion over the world. The orb also refers to the iconography of the Salvator Mundi, Christ as Saviour and Ruler of the World. The treatment of the curly hair, the calm stance and the balanced proportions are characteristic of Baroque devotional sculpture from the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
The original polychromy is partially preserved. The gilding and painted surface show age-related wear; the sculpture has undergone both earlier restorations and more recent localised conservation work. It stands on a polychromed polygonal base.
