Virgin And Child - Polychrome Wood Sculpture - Touraine (france) - 17th Century

Artist: Ecole Française (touraine) Du Xviième Siècle

This charming Virgin and Child sculpture in carved and polychromed wood, created in the Touraine region during the 17th century, beautifully reflects the devotional spirit of early modern France.

The Virgin stands upright in a frontal and serene posture, holding the Christ Child on her left arm, following a traditional iconography inherited from the medieval period. The somewhat stylized proportions and simplified facial features reveal a regional craftsmanship focused more on spiritual expression than academic realism.

The drapery, carved in broad and fluid folds, gives rhythm to the figure. The original polychromy, now partially worn, still shows traces of red, green and ochre pigments, offering a remarkable aged patina highly appreciated by collectors. The visible losses and wear are consistent with the age of the piece and contribute to its authenticity as a devotional object.

The Child, with rounded forms and softly defined features, enhances the intimate relationship with the Virgin, reinforcing the emotional dimension of the sculpture. This work is characteristic of provincial workshops from the Loire Valley, where sculptural traditions remained deeply rooted.

Carved from wood and retaining its original presence, this piece stands as a fine example of 17th-century French religious folk art.

An authentic and evocative sculpture, perfect for collectors of sacred art or lovers of antique devotional objects.
