Virgin And Child, Lombard School, C. 1580, Circle Of Bernardino Campi

A charming Italian Renaissance religious painting depicting the Madonna and Child in a composition imbued with gentleness and contemplation.

Painted in oil on canvas in the second half of the 16th century, this work belongs to the Lombard pictorial tradition and shows strong stylistic affinities with the work of Bernardino Campi’s (1522–1591) circle, a major figure of the Cremona school.

The Virgin, dressed in a deep red gown covered by an olive-green veil, gently tilts her head toward the Infant Jesus in a gesture full of tenderness. The pyramidal composition, the pearlescent skin tones, the subtle modeling of the faces, and the warm palette dominated by reds, greens, and ochres are all characteristic elements of late Cinquecento Lombard Mannerism.

Intended for private devotion, this Marian image perfectly illustrates the spirituality of the Counter-Reformation, which encouraged the spread of small-format works intended for domestic oratories and private chapels.

The refined treatment of the drapery, the delicacy of the expressions, and the meditative atmosphere of the composition as a whole directly evoke the models developed in the Campi circle in Cremona during the years 1570–1590.

The canvas has undergone previous cleaning and restoration, which now allows for excellent visibility of the composition.

The work is presented in an elegant 19th-century neo-Gothic gilded wood frame, which harmonizes particularly well with its Marian subject.
