Commemorative (silver) Ciborium Of Baroness Maria Fussini, Italy (rome?), Early 19th Century
Silver ciborium resting on a circular, fluted base and a baluster-style stem. The base, the knob, and the lower part of the bowl are adorned with an elegant repoussé and chased design of twisted flutes and foliage motifs. The smooth side of the bowl bears the engraved commemorative inscription: “IN MEMORIA DELLA BARONESSA MARIA FUSSINI.” Removable domed lid, topped with a small cross. The interior of the bowl and lid are gilded.
Baroness Maria Fussini, born into a wealthy noble family in Piedmont, distinguished herself through her charitable work. In 1925, she founded an “Asilo Nido” (daycare center) in Rome’s Tor de’ Cenci neighborhood to provide care for young children. This liturgical object was likely donated or dedicated in her memory.
