Reliquary “ex Ossibus S. M. Incogniti,” Italy, 18th Century
Glass-fronted reliquary made of blackened wood, Italy, 18th century. In the center is a fragment of a skull bearing the original inscription “Ex Ossibus S. M. Incogniti” (“from the bones of an unknown holy martyr”). This designation refers to the relic of a saint from the catacombs whose name has not been preserved. The relic is surrounded by floral decoration, metal trimmings, and handcrafted ornaments.
The wax seals preserved on the reverse attest to the ecclesiastical authentication of the entire piece.
