Large Frame - Tabernacle, Carved And Gilded Wood With Figurative Decorations, Italy, C. 1700
A large, richly carved and gilded wooden frame with an architectural composition, featuring abundant decoration in high relief. The side panels are adorned with putti, mascarons, grotesque heads, scrolls, foliage, and powerful volutes.
The upper section, which is particularly elaborate, features two large scrolls surmounted by seated male figures, framing a central arched pediment. In the center, within an architectural niche, is a remarkable relief scene depicting an Eastern figure on horseback accompanied by a servant, while two other small figurative reliefs occupy the side panels.
With its dynamic architecture, pronounced volutes, and profusion of sculptural decoration, this frame follows the tradition of late 17th- or early 18th-century Italian Baroque. It was likely originally intended to frame a painting or a mirror.
Carved and gilded wood. Much of the gilding has been touched up or renewed at a later date. Signs of wear, minor damage, losses, and previous restorations. The mirror is likely a later addition.
