"Columbine-shaped Pokal ("akelei Pokal"), Silver And Vermeil, Germany Circa 1850-1880"
A columbine-shaped lidded vase depicting Saint George slaying the dragon. Silver (540 g), gilded on the inside, probably Germany (Hanau), Historicist period, circa 1850–1880, in the Gothic/Renaissance style. A richly crafted prestige piece in the shape of a columbine, entirely repoussé and chased. The body and lid feature lobed reliefs in a teardrop shape, evoking the petals of a fleur-de-lis; the lid finial is formed by a sculpted floral bouquet. Baluster stem; base adorned with a full, three-dimensional figure of Saint George slaying the dragon. Several hallmarks on the reverse (including "BM," others unidentified), probably maker's and workshop marks. Signs of use, patina, condition consistent with age.
