A George III sterling silver tankard, Francis Crump, London, 1773

Of slightly tapering cylindrical form, raised on a moulded circular foot and divided by a slender horizontal band. The surface is entirely enriched with finely engraved decoration composed of bold foliate scrolls, asymmetrical shells, stylised flowers, and scrolling vegetal motifs. The centre of the body features a large shaped cartouche framed by rocaille ornament and left plain for the addition of an armorial engraving. The domed hinged cover is decorated en suite with the same ornamental repertoire and fitted with a traditional thumbpiece, while the double scroll handle terminates in a heart-shaped lower terminal. Gilt silver interior.
