An Italian Bergère Armchair With Vienna Straw Panels. Piedmont, Late 19th Century

A late 19th-century Piedmontese carved and lacquered poplar wood bergère à pozzetto armchair, attributable to the finest regional cabinet-making and heavily inspired by French neoclassical Louis XVI models. The enveloping, semi-circular frame features elegant double-caned panels (Vienna straw) that lighten the silhouette along the sides and backrest. The front supports consist of fluted, tapered legs, connected to the seat rail by corner blocks decorated with relief-carved rosettes. The arched armrests terminate in elegant scroll terminals. The generous seat, equipped with a removable cushion, is fully upholstered along with the backrest in an ochre-yellow damask/brocade fabric, adorned with polychrome floral motifs in the classical taste.
