Beautiful cylindrical pewter mug with relief decoration depicting four episodes from the life of the “Prodigal Son,” a parable of Jesus according to Luke: his farewell, his escapades, the shepherd, and his return, accompanied by human masks, full-length figures, and busts. The lid is topped with a spinner and features a molded S-shaped thumb rest; the base rests on three feet depicting cherubs.

The lid’s finial has been re-soldered and one foot has been reinforcedTwo examples are illustrated in *Sächsisches Zinn des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts* by Günter Reinheckel (pp. 143 and 192).

This tankard was cast from a mold dating to the late 16th or early 17th century and is identical in every respect to the model produced by the master known as the "Crown Master" (*Meister mit der Krone*), who was active in Marienberg during that period. Due to the absence of this master founder's touchmark, it cannot be definitively dated to the early 17th century; it is therefore classified as "after" the original, indicating a later production from the 17th, 18th, or 19th century.

These objects with relief decoration, known as “Edelzinn,” were not chiseled, as is often claimed, but came “straight from the foundry,” which required a mold of high-quality definition and a high level of mastery of casting techniques.
The detail of the relief decoration on the tankard presented here is of a quality equal to that of its period counterparts.
