**************

Very rare pewter wine pitcher with a shouldered shape, sloping plinth foot, and a "postilion's boot" shaped cup with a recessed lid and a thumb rest with two buds.
Control mark: crowned C / 1737 / (ETAM)PE.
Mark of François DOYEN, received as a master around 1738: crowned hammer / FD / E (E for Etampes).
Height: 17.4 cm.
ETAMPES, before 1753, the date of this master's death.

In very good condition.
This "boot" shaped cup is common in the centers of Châteaudun, Montargis, Orléans, Chartres,...etc. ETAMPES can be added to this list, as this is the second recorded example of this type of cup. All other examples found to date are of the shouldered, goblet-shaped type.
The maker's mark was identified very recently following archival research.
The royal edict of 1691, which established the control mark and its updating with each year, was generally not respected, and the year 1737 is the only one recorded for this center. It was therefore used from 1737 until the French Revolution
