Rare Pewter Wine Pitcher - Essoyes (champagne), Early 18th Century
Artist: Joseph Girardin
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay
.*****************
Pewter pitcher (wine measure), with a shoulder, short oblique foot, quarter-round bowl, and acorn thumb rest.
Control mark: crowned C / ESSOYE / (17)01.
Mark of an unidentified maker: crowned hammer / (16)71 / illegible initials.
Height: 22.2 cm.
ESSOYES (Champagne), First half of the 18th century.
Extremely rare provenance in perfect condition; only six pitchers from this center have been found in nearly 50 years...
Only four makers are listed to date in ESSOYES: the GIRARDINs, Jean, Joseph I and II, then Jean-Baptiste.
Given the date partially visible on this hallmark (but already legibly recorded on another piece), it can only be Joseph I GIRARDIN, born in 1655 and received as a master's son in 1671.
This pitcher belonged successively to the famous former collections of René RICHARD and Daniel ALLIX.
