Pair Of Carved, Polychrome Wooden Altar Angels, Southern Germany, Mid-18th Century.
Pair of Baroque altar angels
Southern Germany, 18th century.
Carved wood, polychrome, and partially gilded. Two matching cherubs, depicted in flight, with outstretched wings featuring finely carved feathers, arms in expressive poses, and bent legs. Their chubby faces with rosy cheeks are framed by curly hair. Gilded drapery drapes over their shoulders, wraps around their hips, and ties at the sides. Probably intended to flank a Baroque altarpiece.
Signs of wear and loss of polychromy and gilding.
