Reliquary Capsule (theca), Ex Ossibus “st. Vincent De Paul,” Silver, Sealed, Italy, 19th Century
Reliquary of Saint Vincent de Paul (1581–1660)
France, probably 19th century
An ornate reliquary decorated with foliage and flowers, featuring in the center a glazed oval reliquary capsule surmounted by a finely crafted bust of Saint Vincent de Paul, founder of the Congregation of the Mission (Lazarists).
The capsule, bearing the inscription “S. VINCENT DE PAUL,” contains a small relic mounted on a textile backing, surrounded by delicate convent-style embroidery in gold and silver thread.
The frame, richly decorated with roses, lilies, foliage, and scrollwork in relief, attests to meticulous craftsmanship. The lower portion features a cartouche with a decorative monogram.
A fine example of 19th-century sacred art and popular devotion, likely originating from a French religious circle associated with the Vincentian communities.
