Memento Mori, Deer Antler Sculpture, From A Cabinet Of Curiosities, Tyrol, 19th Century
Memento mori with a Sleeping Putto
Tyrol, 19th century.
Finely carved deer antler. A nude putto with curly hair and closed eyes, reclining on pleated drapery, one hand resting on a skull. The body is rendered with supple modeling, the curls are meticulously detailed, and the folds are deeply carved. Surface ranges from cream to a brownish patina; the material’s natural grain is partially preserved on the reverse. A cabinet of curiosities object in the tradition of Baroque vanitas pieces, evoking the transience of life.
